Becoming an Advanced Life Support Provider in Tidewater
The ALS Regional Sanctioning process is managed by the Regional EMS Education Coordinator. This page will provide information relating to the ALS Sanctioning Policies and Procedures, skills testing, written testing, and the oral board interview. While affiliation with an EMS agency is not required to begin the sanctioning process, providers must be affiliated with an EMS agency to complete the process and to become regionally sanctioned.
The first step is:
Tidewater EMS Region ALS Regional Written Testing
Who must complete the Regional ALS Written Exam?
* ALS EMS providers (Intermediate and Paramedic) who completed their ALS training program > 1 year from the date they begin the sanctioning process.
* ALS EMS providers who did not complete an ALS program at an accredited institution in Tidewater.
What is the Regional ALS Written Exam?
* 100 questions
* General knowledge exam that is protocol-based
* Multiple choice, with exception to rhythm interpretation section
* Scenario-based
* Consistent with current ACLS, PALS, and BTLS/PHTLS guidelines
* Validated
The second step is:
Tidewater EMS Region ALS Regional Practical Skills Check-off
Who must complete the Regional Practical Skills Check-Off?
* ALS EMS providers (Intermediate and Paramedic) who completed their ALS training program > 2 years from the date they begin the sanctioning process.
* ALS EMS providers who did not complete an ALS program at an accredited institution in Tidewater.

The third step is:
Tidewater EMS Region ALS Regional Oral Board Interview
Who must complete the Oral Board Interview?
* All ALS EMS providers wishing to become regionally sanctioned in Tidewater
The Oral Board Interview:
* must be scheduled by the EMS agency's training department or Operational Medical Director.
* requires affiliation with and the sponsorship of a Tidewater EMS agency.
* is based on the Tidewater Regional Medical Protocols.
* will last approximately 30 minutes
* may only be conducted after an ALS candidate has successfully completed regional written and practical test requirements and any required field internship and is approved by the agency OMD.
* will be conducted by a panel who, through questions and interactions with the candidate, will judge the individual's overall knowledge of pertinent medical information, regional medical protocols, and the ability to carry out the responsibilities of an ALS provider.
