Equipment trailers purchased, equipped, and distributed to communities across Hampton Roads to improve the region's emergency sheltering capabilities — part of an initiative more than 10 years in the making.

Using funds from the DHS Urban Areas Security Initiative and the HRMMRS, 13 Shelter Support Units were purchased, equipped, and distributed to communities in the Hampton Roads region. Each SSU is designed to support public sheltering operations during emergencies and disasters.

Each jurisdiction has a Shelter Support Unit available to support regional emergency sheltering operations. SSUs are designed to be deployed where they are needed across the region.
