Overview

Whether in the backcountry, surf, or ice-covered lake, drowning remains one of the most time-sensitive medical emergencies. This session reviews recognition, rescue priorities, and resuscitation of drowning victims in both prehospital and wilderness contexts. Attendees will discuss the physiology of submersion, cold-water reflexes, and post-rescue pulmonary complications. Practical emphasis will be placed on scene safety, airway management, and hypothermia prevention during extended extrication or transport.
