Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic was a wake-up call for EMS agencies of all sizes, exposing critical gaps in preparedness and response. From personal protective equipment shortages to unclear treatment protocols and overwhelmed hospitals, EMS agencies faced unprecedented challenges with limited guidance. These vulnerabilities highlight the urgent need for stronger integration between EMS and public health systems.
The next pandemic is not a question of if but when. EMS leaders must apply lessons from COVID-19, SARS, H1N1, and Ebola to prepare for workforce shortages, hospital diversions, strained mutual aid, resource prioritization, and system-wide disruptions. This presentation will examine the historical impact of public health emergencies on EMS, highlight key takeaways, and outline actionable strategies for strengthening preparedness and response.
With an emphasis on strengthening EMS-public health collaboration, attendees will leave equipped with insights to prepare their systems for the inevitable challenges of the next public health emergency.
