About
Course Description: EMS Officer 1 (EMSO1) is an entry-level leadership course targeted at EMSpersonnel preparing to take on their first supervisory role within an agency.This course is intended for those serving in or preparing to transition intotheir first supervisory roles, such as Attendant-in-Charge (AIC), crew leader,team lead, or other similar positions (e.g., lieutenant), depending on agencystructure.Participants will develop foundational skills in EMS operations andadministration to support future growth into mid-level supervisory positions.Topics include the role of the EMS officer, compliance and accountability,cultural diversity, safety and wellness, Total Quality Management (TQM),community and media relations, functional leadership, effective communication,Incident Command System (ICS), and managing multiple casualty incidents (MCI).A computer or tablet with internet access is required, and students mustcomplete 8 hours of online pre-course assignments before attending theclassroom portion.

Complete Before Attending
Ø Minimum age of 18
Ø Hold a current Virginia Certification of EMR or higher
Ø No enforcement or corrective action from EMS Agency, OMD,or OEMS within 5yrs.
Ø Submit copies of NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 certificates orFEMA/VDFP Transcript
Ø Review all online video presentations
Ø Complete all homework assignments prior to class
Ø Bring a computer/tablet with internet capability to class

Chris was a DoD Firefighter-Paramedic, the Highland County EMS Coordinator and is now the EMS Systems Planner for OEMS. Chris was on the Advisory Board's Workforce Development Committee, EMS Officer and Standards of Excellence Workgroups and continues to as OEMS Staff. Experienced EMS Preceptor, Education Coordinator, CSEMS Executive Board & CISM team.
