Lost in Time-A Case Study in Transient Global Amnesia

Transient  Global Amnesia (TGA) is a rare neurological condition characterized by the  sudden onset of short-term memory loss, repetitive questioning, and  confusion, often mimicking more serious conditions such as stroke. While  uncommon, TGA has recently gained public attention following journalist Katie  Couric's experience with the condition. This case study follows a close  family member who experienced a TGA episode and explores common symptoms,  potential triggers, prognosis, and recovery. Special emphasis will be placed  on the EMS assessment of patients with altered mental status, the importance  of ruling out stroke and other emergent conditions and recognizing how  cognitive bias may lead providers to mistakenly attribute symptoms to  psychiatric illness or substance use.
