Spreading the Healing: A Journey Through EMS, Leadership, and Human Connection

Overview
Emergency Medical Services is a profession built on technical skill, rapid decision-making, and resilience—but its greatest impact often comes through empathy, kindness, and human connection. Spreading the Healing is a 45-minute motivational and reflective presentation that weaves together the evolution of EMS, air medical transport, and leadership through personal storytelling drawn from over four decades in healthcare and emergency services.
Through firsthand accounts spanning early volunteer experiences, the formative years of modern paramedicine, the growth of helicopter EMS, and leadership roles across hospital-based and community EMS systems, this presentation highlights how EMS practice has evolved—and how the core values of compassion, professionalism, and lifelong learning have remained constant. Participants will explore the influence of mentors, work ethic, and informal leadership, as well as the power of empathy in moments that extend far beyond clinical outcomes.
This session also reflects on loss, legacy, and resilience, honoring colleagues who have shaped the profession while encouraging providers at every career stage to recognize their own capacity to lead, teach, and inspire others. Designed to inform, motivate, and reconnect providers with their purpose, Spreading the Healing reminds attendees that healing is not limited to medical interventions—it is something EMS professionals spread every day through their actions, attitudes, and example.
