Status Asthmaticus

Overview
Status asthmaticus is a life-threatening form of acute asthma exacerbation characterized by severe, persistent airway obstruction that fails to respond to standard bronchodilator therapy. This presentation provides an in-depth review of the pathophysiology, clinical assessment, and evidence-based management of status asthmaticus in both prehospital and emergency department settings. Emphasis is placed on early recognition of respiratory failure, advanced airway considerations, and rapid pharmacologic interventions including high-dose beta-agonists, anticholinergics, corticosteroids, magnesium sulfate, and adjunctive therapies. The lecture also explores risk factors for severe disease, key differentiating findings, and current guidelines for escalation of care, including non-invasive ventilation, intubation indications, and critical care transport needs. Through case-based discussion and clinical pearls, this session equips learners with the knowledge and decision-making skills required to manage status asthmaticus effectively and improve patient outcomes.
