Birth Beyond the Hospital - EMS Essentials

This class provides EMS professionals with practical knowledge about normal vaginal birth in the out-of-hospital setting. Participants will learn what to expect during the stages of labor and birth, how to recognize normal physiologic birth, essential maternal and newborn assessments, appropriate initial interventions, and when additional support or transport is indicated. The course emphasizes effective communication with the birthing person, family, midwife, and receiving facility, while addressing common out-of-hospital birth scenarios such as precipitous birth, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, and newborn transition. The goal is to increase EMS confidence, reduce unnecessary interventions, and promote safe, respectful, and coordinated care when responding to a birth outside the hospital.
